Fans Point Out Bizarre Trend Between Randy Orton, AEW and Released Wrestlers

July 20, 2017

Mark Henry Announces Retirement from In-Ring Competition

Starting his career in 1996, Mark Henry went from representing the Olympics, to Sexual Chocolate, to channeling his “World’s Strongest Man” gimmick by folding frying pans, to creating his dreaded Hall of Pain, and everything in-between. Although his career has been up and down over the past 21 years, WWE executives can certainly say that Henry has been one of the most consistent members of the roster over the last two decades.

Discussing his career with fellow Nation of Domination members Ron Simmons (Faarooq) and The Godfather (Kama Mustafa) on Table for 3, Henry announced that he was wrapping up his days as an in-ring talent.

“It’s been 21 years, and as we know, that Father Time is undefeated,” said Henry. “My time is coming to an end. I’ll go from talent to an employee here in a few months. I’m just looking forward to making that transition, helping these young guys and girls coming in beneath us.”
Henry, 46, added that he will be shifting over more to help the company “restock on talent,” which is something he has been doing since competing in the ring part-time.

Sneak peek: Seth Green imagines kid wrestlers for 'Camp WWE'

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and John Cena are superstars in a pro wrestling ring, but Seth Green is on a mission to make their kid selves just as entertaining while toasting marshmallows and driving grownups crazy.

The actor and longtime wrestling fan is reimagining grapplers as 8-year-old boys and girls at summer camp in the adult animated series Camp WWE. The show premieres on demand May 1 on the WWE Network streaming service.

Green and his team at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios regularly tackle pop culture with series such as Robot Chicken and SuperMansion, but with Camp WWE, Green says, “getting to introduce these characters to a different audience (and) a new generation in a way they’ve never seen before is like a unique kind of privilege for me.”

The summer camp is headed up by Vince McMahon — with the WWE chairman, president and CEO voicing himself — though he’s an even more over-the-top persona than in the ring, as he rides giraffes and takes swigs from McMahonade. His daughter Stephanie McMahon and Triple H are 15-year-old camp counselors, while “Nature Boy” Ric Flair and Sgt. Slaughter are activity supervisors for the kids.

WWE And NXT ASF 2016 Coverage Day Two: Samoa Joe, Balor, Bayley Steals Gimmick, Q&As, Tryouts, More

Matches

* Apollo Crews defeated Tino Sabbotelli.

* Chad Gable defeated Riddick Moss.

* Dan Matha vs. Aiden English kept seeing interference from Simon Gotch, so Dylan Miley ran in. William Regal showed up and made it a tag team match, which Miley and Matha won, to the shock of the crowd. Matha and Miley are really plain, but they're brand new to live events, too.

* Tye Dillinger defeated Kishan Raftar. Dillinger chopped the living hell out of Raftar, who messed up an armdrag. It was surprising to see Raftar, Matha and Miley, because last year most of the talents we saw were almost TV ready.

* Bayley defended the Women's title and beat Nia Jax in an NXT TakeOver London re-match. Eva Marie got beaten up by Bayley after the match. Again, Bayley was over. The barricades were rushed as soon as her music hit. During the match, Bayley grabbed the T-shirt and "10" sign that Dillinger left and totally stole his gimmick.

* Jason Jordan defeated Johnny Gargano with a half nelson suplex. Johnny Gargano was really over, as he's an Ohio guy. These two had a good match.

* Apollo Crews defeated Riddick Moss. This was the kind of match both guys had been having all weekend, which was good for the live crowd.

* Billie Kay defeated Alexa Bliss. Poor Alexa Bliss can't get a win in her own hometown. The crowd always popped for her when she came out, but she'd end up heeling them. I have no idea what the Billie Kay gimmick is, but her entrance theme is pretty cool.

* Chad Gable defeated Scott Dawson with a deadlift German suplex. Their partners were fanning them off with the signature towels before they locked up. A really good match, great chemistry.

* Asuka & Peyton Royce defeated Mandy Rose & Emma via the Asuka Lock. I don't think I saw Mandy Rose really mess up all weekend, which says a lot considering she was on a reality show a few months ago. She's learning quickly by the looks of it.

* Finn Balor and Sami Zayn defeated Samoa Joe and Baron Corbin. All of these guys felt like stars in this. This was an outstanding tag team match, which saw Balor get the pin after a Bloody Sunday on Corbin, following a Helluva kick from Sami Zayn. Much like yesterday, it was really impressive to see.

Q&As

* Mark Henry said he didn't know what he's doing at WrestleMania, and might jump someone to get involved. He said he wouldn't mind being in the Andre the Giant memorial battle royal, and tells a story about Andre picking him up after being pushed down at an event. He singles out Apollo Crews as an NXT talent he'd like to face and says he pushed for him. He called the Mae Young era the most fun in his career and said she was a good kisser, before singling out the Undertaker at WrestleMania 22 as his favorite opponent.

* Sara Del Rey, Matt Bloom and William Regal did a great Q&A. They said that nobody from last year's ASF tryouts was still with WWE, and the ones we see are abbreviated to give us an idea. Sara says that she and Matt are like a brother/sister team, while Regal says he coaches a lot of footwork and evaluates talent. Regal says there's no cutoff for age if someone has a supreme skill set, but for someone new, 30ish is the general range. Sara tells us that in her opinion, Bayley should be the next to go up to the WWE roster, and fans thank and clap for Sara's part in the Diva's revolution. They're asked about ZZ, and they say that he's working hard and getting better. William Regal says that he's hopeful that there will be a new season of Breaking Ground, and that he's very excited for Shinsuke Nakamura. Bloom says he's excited to see him and not get kicked this time. Sara closes by saying she'd love women's tag titles in NXT or the main roster.

Familiar Faces

- We mentioned yesterday that several wrestling personalities were around for the Arnold Classic, and today was no different. Former WCW talent Bill Kazmaier met with fans at the event.

Also, Hardcore legend Sabu was there signing and taking photos.

Other notes

- As was the case yesterday, several talents were signing autographs. While the lines didn't reach anywhere near the length of yesterday's they were still pretty long. Eva Marie was a big hit, and was very personable and friendly, taking pictures with people and adding them to her snapchat. Gable and Jordan are also incredibly friendly with individuals in the crowd.

- During yesterday's match with American Alpha, The Revival and made fun of them, calling them the "American Males."

- Tom Phillips is a pro and seems like he loves his job. Dasha Fuentes is a pretty good ring announcer, and they did a great job hosting today.

- Sunday's crowd was much smaller, much easier to navigate and the like. The place was buzzing about Saturday night's UFC.

- Regarding the tryouts, we saw the same names as yesterday there. If they do well, they're invited to a full tryout at the Performance Center.

- Tommaso Ciampa didn't wrestle, but did sign autographs. He wasn't using crutches, slings, or anything to indicate he was severely injured.

Mark Henry On How Veterans Treat Younger Talents Now, His WWE Career, Vince McMahon, More

This week's episode of "Talk is Jericho" with Chris Jericho features former World Heavyweight Champion and The World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry. Courtesy of my good friend Mark Adam Haggerty, below are highlights:

Chris starts the show by performing his cowbell rendition of Mark Henry's theme song. Mark can't remember the name of the Oscar Award-winning hip hop duo that performed his track—Three Six Mafia—and says: "I can't remember. I been hit in the head too many times. Maybe I should get in on this lawsuit with these dummies." Mark says that the majority of the people on the lawsuit only worked in the WWE for a brief period, and it was toward the tail-end of their careers. He says that he mentioned Sinn Bodhi AKA Kizarny on another podcast, and Bodhi was livid over the shoot Henry did on him. Mark went on to say, "Kizarny's mad at me like he could hold water."

Mark says that his very first wrestling match was on pay-per-view. He wasn't trained, he had never taken a bump, but Jerry Lawler insisted that he could work with him. Jericho asks for the details of the feud and Mark says: "Well Jake got cleaned up. Uh—quote, unquote." Mark says that the developmental system was devised specifically for him: "Doctor Tom just decided he was gonna stop wrestling and start training full time." Mark Henry was the first Developmental Superstar in history, as well as the first wrestler in WWE to receive a guaranteed contract. Henry says that he's the second longest contracted wrestler—after the Undertaker. Other Superstars like Goldust and Triple H were around before Mark, but Goldust has come and gone, and Triple H is now semi-retired. Mark says that a fan once told him he's had over 8,000 wrestling matches, and that he's in the Top 10 for most matches of all time.

Chris asks how Mark got into the wrestling business. Mark is—or at least was—the real "World's Strongest Man." He's the only man in history to become a world champion in Power Lifting, Olympic Weight Lifting, and Strong Man Competition. Added to that, he's the only man to also hold a world championship in professional wrestling. That technically makes Henry a 3-sport world champion. He was touring talk shows after the 1996 Summer Olympics, and he was asked by Oprah what he likes to do to unwind. He told her he likes video games, live music, and all sorts of sports. "But on Saturday and Sunday," Henry continued, "I'm watching wrestling. Don't even try to bother me. Those are my wrestling days." Vince McMahon called Mark personally and when Mark picked up, Vince said, "So I heard you like to watch wrestling."

Interesting Character Details Revealed For 'Camp WWE' Adult Comedy On The WWE Network

We noted earlier this year that WWE Network would be premiering a "Camp WWE" animated comedy series in late 2015. Billed as WWE's "first adult comedy," the show is a partnership between WWE and Seth Green's Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

We now have new details on the show as Executive Producers Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, Eric Towner and John Harvatine and casting directors Ruth Lambert and Robert McGee have been looking for voice actors for the Camp WWE tapings. The tapings will be on August 9th in Los Angeles and those doing the voice work will be paid $906. Below are details on the characters:

* Vince McMahon - head of the camp and a 50 year old, big brash, ego-maniacal billionaire who is also a loving father that hates complaining campers and ass-kissing subordinates, but loves money and power and is always thinking of new ways to run down his competition. Vince's character is billed as "clearly, the most intelligent character on the show."

* Triple H - a 14-15 year old co-head camp counselor called Hunter. His character is tough and intimidating and he's a vindictive prankster who is always trying to get Vince's respect and always trying to win the love of Vince's daughter. Hunter considers himself to be highly intelligent "but still has a long way to go."

* Stephanie McMahon - the other co-head camp counselor, her character is also 14-15 years old. She has all of her father's traits - arrogant, ruthless and intimidating but lacks the maturity to get the job done. She tries to run the camp but runs to her father at the first sign of trouble. Stephanie's character is "beautiful, bold, confrontational and fearless."

* John Cena - an 8 year old camper described as the "most adorable, cherry, upbeat boy scout type" and a cute goody two-shoes who will do anything to make the other campers happy. Cena's character is also described as a polarizing figure at the camp who is sometimes used by others to do their dirty work. He annoys people because he never gives up at anything and is always trying to inspire others.

* The Undertaker - the scariest 8 year old you'll ever meet, a large gothic kid obsessed with mystical powers and death. His character is based on Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy and Satin from Game of Thrones.

* Big Show - a big, dumb and gentle 8 year old. Big Show's character is both childlike and monstrous in size but doesn't understand his own strength or the meaning of any word with more than two syllables. This was described as an 8 year old Homer Simpson.

* Mark Henry - the strongest 8 year old in the world, who loves food and girls. He brags that he knows everything about women but it comes out that he knows nothing about women.

* Hulk Hogan - this character will be nixed due to the racist comments controversy but they wanted Hogan's character to be a camp legend who is huge, powerful and charismatic but tired from being old and being from a different era, still trying to connect with people by calling them "brother."

* The Bella Twins - Brie Bella is the cunning, cute and sneaky one while Nikki Bella is the tomboy of the two and has the best body of all the women campers. They sometimes play "twin magic" on unsuspecting campers.

* Ric Flair - a camper who is 5 years older than everyone else that rides in limousines and jet planes. His character is cocky, always styling & profiling and is also the dirtiest kid in camp who shocks Vince with stories of his sexual conquests.

* R-Truth - Neither big or bright but is funny and drives people crazy with his misguided theories on why things are what they are. His character is also the most gullible camper who always gives you second and third-hand information that's almost impossible to believe.

Interview with Mark Henry

Mark Henry was recently interviewed by WithLeather.com. Here are some highlights:

His five-year-plan for his heralded fake retirement speech:
Well, I mean, I’m a constant entertainer. It’s something that I thought of four years ago, five years ago when I signed my contract. ‘At the end of this contract, I’m going to retire and I’m going to have everybody ready for me to retire, and then I’ll get ‘em just the way I want to.’ It’s funny, [this] five-year plan. The only thing that can come to mind is Hannibal in The A-Team: “I love it when a plan comes together.”

Taking a pay cut when he re-signed with WWE:
I took a 50 percent pay cut when I signed that last deal five years ago because I was looked at as being a middle-of-the-road performer. During that time, John Cena made millions, and that’s what I want. I mean, Money in the Bank is not just the name of the pay-per-view, it’s a chance for me to get my will to where I want it so when the time does come for me to officially retire, I won’t have to worry about nothing.

His WWE career:
Everybody that’s had the road be smooth and perfect with a steady incline, I’d like to meet ‘em. I don’t think it’s ever been done. There’s highs and lows in life, and there’s highs and lows in sports entertainment. It’s a credit to me that I’ve been around 17 years, so I’ve had a long time to have highs and lows. Obviously, I’ve done something right.

WWE Celebrating CT Special Olympics Partnership with Several Events This Week

This week, WWE will celebrate its official partnership with Special Olympics Connecticut (SOCT), an organization that provides year-round sports training and competitions for close to 15,000 athletes of all ages with intellectual disabilities and unified partners throughout the state.

The Torch Run will stop at WWE Headquarters in Stamford, Conn., Friday and will feature special guests WWE COO Triple H, Executive Vice President of Creative Stephanie McMahon, Superstar Mark Henry, Special Olympics executives and athletes, and local dignitaries. The final leg of the run will end at the opening ceremonies for the 2013 Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, which WWE will be part of.

WWE’s commitment to inspiring respect for all people and supporting Special Olympics Connecticut will help empower athletes of all ages and abilities to make great achievements and be recognized for their accomplishments,” Special Olympics Connecticut President Beau Doherty said.

WWE’s Big Show, Henry, The Bella Twins and WWE Hall of Famer Sgt. Slaughter will take part in the celebrations surrounding the 2013 Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games in New Haven throughout the weekend.

“WWE is proud to support the Special Olympics Connecticut mission to inspire inclusion and respect for all people,” WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon said. “WWE, its Superstars and more than 700 employees, look forward to being part of their important events and activities across our home state.”
